How to Replace the Starter Motor on a BMW 320 E90/E91/E92

To perform this operation, the first step is to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery located in the trunk on the right side. Raise the vehicle from the front right side to access the starter motor. Remove the screws securing the lower transmission cover and take off the heat shield to access the component. Now disconnect the electrical connector and the power cable, being careful not to bend the wiring. You will find 2 bolts securing the starter motor to the engine block (transmission side). Do not remove the starter motor without support: it weighs about 4 to 7 lbs. You can find the new starter motor on eBay with the code 276440163517 for $68.99, with free shipping. Install the new starter motor, torque the bolts; reinstall the heat shield, lower cover, and wheel. Lower the car. Reconnect the negative terminal.
