Check Engine Belt Tension

Model: BMW Serie 3 E46 - Years 1998-2006
Part: Timing belt

The engine transfers energy to various components through belts and pulleys: the alternator, water pump, timing system, and more. Checking the correct tension of the belts that transmit motion to the engine components is very important. To access the belts and have enough space to work comfortably, you must remove the radiator cooling fan. For this operation, simply unscrew the four retaining screws and the connected control unit. You can check the tension of the belts by pressing down on the belt at the longest point between two pulleys. The play should remain within 5/10 mm maximum. If the belt is loose, adjust the tensioners to restore the correct tension.
