Steering Angle Sensor Replacement

Model: BMW Serie 3 E46 - Years 1998-2006

The steering angle sensor for this vehicle model is a potentiometer with sliding contacts located along the steering column at the rear. Because it has sliding contacts, the contact blades and tracks tend to wear out, causing false contacts and irregularities in the measurement of the steering angle. To remove it, first, take off the portion of the dashboard directly under the steering wheel. Then, disconnect the joint connecting the steering column to the steering gearbox to free the shaft of the column. Next, remove the retaining ring at the end of the steering column shaft, carefully extract the plastic bushings without damaging them, and disconnect the steering angle sensor by releasing the associated cable.
