Oil and Oil Filter Change on a Chevrolet Captiva

Changing the oil filter is an operation that should be done alongside an oil change. First, drain the engine of the old oil by lifting the vehicle on a ramp to access the first plug located in the oil sump. Once unscrewed, you can drain the oil into a suitable container. The vehicle has an oil bath filter located within the engine block. To empty the oil filter housing, unscrew a second plug located above the passenger side driveshaft. After ensuring no oil remains in the engine, replace both plugs and lower the car from the ramp. The oil filter cover is located beneath the diesel filter body near the air filter housing. To access it, remove the air filter cover and the intake hose connected to it. It is advisable to also remove the air filter to prevent any oil and diesel contamination during the operation. Once the intake system is removed, unscrew the diesel filter body connected to the car with two quick-connect hoses and an electrical connector. Unscrewing the plastic collar of the diesel filter body allows you to replace the diesel filter if necessary. After removing the diesel filter body, extract the bracket it was mounted on, secured to the car with two nuts on top. You will now have access to the oil filter cover, which can be unscrewed with a socket wrench. Once unscrewed, it can be removed from the engine, giving access to the oil filter inside. Simply remove the old filter from the cover and replace it with a new one, ensuring to also replace the O-ring (included with the new filter) located above the thread of the cover. It is also recommended to lubricate the new O-ring with a bit of oil to avoid friction during reassembly. Now, reattach the oil filter cover with the new filter inside, taking care not to overtighten it, and proceed to reassemble the diesel filter body and intake system. After reassembling everything, you can top up the new oil, ensuring to check the oil level after running the engine for about a minute following the first top-up.
