What Does the "L" Mean on the Gear Selector of the Ford Kuga PHEV?

The "L" on the gear selector of the Ford Kuga PHEV (and hybrids) stands for "Lock" and is referred to as the engine braking gear or enhanced engine braking mode. Engaging it virtually locks the automatic gearbox into a lower gear. This provides greater resistance when going downhill, helping to slow the car without constantly using the brake pedal. It effectively simulates what is known as "engine braking" in a conventional vehicle. Additionally, the energy recovery during braking is set to the maximum level, recharging the high-power battery. It is the ideal mode for tackling long downhill stretches, as it converts gravitational energy into electrical energy.
