The message "hill start assist not available" on a Ford vehicle means that the hill start assist system has temporarily deactivated due to a detected fault. It is not an emergency; when we are stopped on a hill, we will need to use the handbrake for the restart, as the car will not stay still on its own when we take our foot off the brake. A solution that often works is to completely turn off the car (waiting a few minutes for the control units to "sleep") and then restart. It is often a problem associated with low battery voltage; the system does not function on extremely steep slopes, unpaved, or slippery surfaces. However, it could also be a fault with the sensors: the system uses wheel speed sensors to determine if the car is rolling. If one of these sensors gets dirty, is damaged, or the wiring is interrupted, the HSA will deactivate. If everything seems to be in order, try a "deep" reset by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for 15-20 minutes: this will reset all the electronic control units.
