How to clean the EGR valve on a Mercedes C-Class W204

To remove the EGR valve from a Mercedes C-Class W204, it is recommended to slightly warm up the engine: the valve is easily accessible from the top of the engine. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, but first move the flexible hose out of the way. The valve will likely be stuck due to carbon deposits, and to extract it, you can use WD-40 or, if that doesn't work, a hammer puller (available on AliExpress with code 1005009194605696 for $28.81, with free shipping). You can also try to pry under the valve to free it. Remove the o-ring, then use a strong degreaser and let it sit for a few minutes, then immerse it in water and scrub with a soft-bristle brush. Remove the actuator cover to clean the internal mechanism as well, and check that the piston moves freely by hand. Replace the o-ring, position the valve, tighten the bolts to 7 lb-ft, reconnect the electrical connector, and reassemble the cover. Clear the error codes with an OBD2 scanner and take it for a test drive.
