The secondary air pump plays a crucial role during cold start, injecting a richer fuel mixture when the lambda sensor has not yet reached the correct temperature to regulate emissions: to prevent excessive unburnt hydrocarbons, the secondary air pump injects air behind the exhaust valves to generate post-combustion and reduce emissions; on Mercedes engines, it is located at the centre of the front and removing it is very straightforward: simply disconnect the power connector and unscrew the mounting bracket bolts.
