How Does the Starter Motor Work and What Causes Failures?

The starter motor is an electric motor that starts the internal combustion engine of a vehicle when you turn the key or press the start button. The starter motor receives power from the battery, allowing the main engine to start. Specifically, the battery sends energy to the starter motor via a component called a Solenoid or Relay. The solenoid pushes the pinion to engage with the engine flywheel. Once the starter motor spins fast enough, the main engine will start while the pinion disengages. However, there are several reasons why the starter motor may fail, including: electrical issues such as corroded cables, loose connections, or a flat battery; a faulty solenoid that fails to send enough current to the motor; brushes, bearings, or windings that wear out over time and are not replaced at the right moment; a worn or stuck pinion that fails to engage and start the engine. These problems can cause symptoms such as a click when attempting to start the engine, which does not turn over at all, or intermittent difficulty starting the vehicle.
