How the Reverse Light Switch Works

In this video, we see how the reverse light switch works on the Volkswagen Polo. This component is mounted on the gearbox and is connected to the gear selector: when reverse gear is engaged, the switch closes the electrical circuit, turning on the rear lights. It consists of a cylindrical body and an internal spring-loaded piston that lowers when the gear selector is activated. With reverse gear engaged, the gear selector presses the piston, closing the circuit, which turns on the lights; with other gears, the piston returns to position and the circuit opens, turning off the lights. To test it, use a 19mm spanner, unscrew it counterclockwise, and connect the switch wires to a battery and a test bulb; if it works, the bulb lights up when you press the piston. Otherwise, the bulb will remain off. Check for damage to the wires or corrosion in the connectors. If you need to replace it: disconnect the battery, unscrew the switch, and install a new one which you can find on tarostrade. It has the code 177911 at £2.23 plus £6.49 for shipping.
