Dismantling the Gearbox and Flywheel

Model: Volkswagen Jetta MK 5, A5 - Years 2005-2010

To dismantle the gearbox, after raising the vehicle on suitable axle stands, remove the driveshaft (by unscrewing the bolts around the connecting flange), the starter motor, the lower support connecting the gearbox to the vehicle chassis, the clutch cable, and unscrew all the bolts along the gearbox bell housing that secure it to the engine block: at this point, you can slide out the gearbox and then the flywheel. You may notice play in the flywheel masses, which often tend to make it noisy: therefore, when replacing the clutch, it is advisable to also replace the flywheel.
