Timing Belt Replacement

Before removing the belt to be replaced, ensure that the relative positions of the crankshaft and camshaft remain fixed to avoid altering the engine timing and risking severe damage. On the toothed wheel fitted to the camshaft, there is an opening with a groove: align the centre of this groove with a hole on the cylinder head. Then, lock the crankshaft with a stop that is fixed to the engine block, which has a toothed flange that couples with the shaft, securing it. Verify the position of the camshaft wheel by inserting a pin into holes arranged at 120° from the grooved one, corresponding to other centring holes on the cylinder head. At this point, loosen the tensioner and remove the idler pulley for the timing belt. Next, remove the timing belt pulley by unscrewing the three screws that secure it to the shaft and take off the belt, sliding out the tensioner pulley. Also replace the coolant pump by extracting it after removing the screws that secure it. Refit the tensioner pulley, ensuring it is inserted into the guide that regulates its eccentric movement. Now, insert the new belt, engaging it with the camshaft wheel and the crankshaft, and reposition the components as they were previously secured. Then, refit the toothed wheel, the idler pulley, and tension the belt by rotating the tensioner pulley and securing it. Tighten the screws on the toothed wheel and remove the stops that block the rotation of the shaft. Check the positions again as at the beginning of the operation and finally, slowly rotate the shaft with a spanner to verify correct movement.
