Volkswagen Jetta - Video tutorial

Model: Volkswagen Jetta A4, MK 4 - Years 1998-2005
Part: Timing belt
Operation: Timing belt replacement

Before proceeding with the removal of the belt to be replaced, it is essential to ensure that the relative positions of the crankshaft and camshaft remain fixed, in order not to alter the engine phases and risk serious breakages. On the sprocket keyed on the camshaft there is an opening with a groove: the center of this groove is matched to a hole in the cylinder head. The crankshaft is then locked with a stop that is fixed on the base and which makes a toothed flange that is coupled to the shaft, locking it. The position of the camshaft wheel is then checked again, by inserting a pin in openings arranged at 120Â ° from the grooved one to which other centering holes on the cylinder head correspond. At this point, loosen the belt tensioner and remove the idle bearing of the timing system. Then the toothed wheel of the timing system is removed by unscrewing the three screws that key it to the shaft and the belt is removed, pulling out the belt tensioner bearing. The coolant pump is also replaced, by extracting it after removing the screws that block it. The belt tensioner bearing is reassembled, making sure to insert it into the guide that adjusts its eccentric movement. Now you can insert the new belt, making it mesh with the camshaft wheel and the crankshaft and repositioning the elements as they were previously fixed. The toothed wheel and the idle bearing are then removed and tension is applied to the belt by rotating the tensioner bearing and fixing it. The screws of the toothed wheel must be tightened and the stops that block the rotation of the shaft must be removed. The positions are checked again as at the beginning of the operation and finally the shaft is slowly rotated with a wrench to check for correct movement.
