Checking the ECU, Coil, and Hall Sensor

The following video presents the problem of an engine that won't start. Excluding other possible causes, a first check to see if there is a spark can be done by connecting a coil, even a used one, as long as its proper functioning is guaranteed. If you verify the presence of a spark, it means the Hall sensor is functioning. If not, leave the key in the ignition position, disconnect the Hall sensor from the distributor, and bring a spark plug wire close to the negative terminal of the battery. With a tester connected to the negative terminal of the battery, touch the central contact of the ECU that controls the spark. If there is a spark, it means the ECU is functioning. Always check the other two contacts, which are positive and negative respectively, with a current tester as well. In summary, if there is no spark with the Hall sensor connected to the ignition but there is when you manually activate the ECU, it means the Hall sensor needs replacing. Start by unscrewing the radiator to move it slightly outwards for better working space. Remove the protection from the distributor and disconnect the Hall sensor. Detach the cap and rotor. Make a mark and try to start the engine to check if the distributor shaft rotates properly. Make reference marks to assist in reassembly. Unscrew the screws and carefully extract the distributor, using some tools for assistance. Gradually extract the pin, ensuring it moves smoothly. It is essential to remember the exact position and orientation of the components. Unscrew the screws and extract the sensor. Refit the new sensor, lubricate the shaft with a drop of oil, and reassemble the other components. Ensure the correct installation of the moving parts and reassemble everything else. You can disconnect the cables so that the cooling fans do not activate. Once the engine reaches the correct temperature, also check the ignition timing if necessary. Car model: Volkswagen T4
