Instructions for Replacing the Alternator

Model: Volkswagen Golf Golf IV, MK 4, Golf 4 - Years 1997-2003

To replace the alternator, first remove the serpentine belt: lift the vehicle on suitable car stands to access the engine bay more easily; then loosen the tensioner of the auxiliary belt and free the pulleys after noting the routing; before continuing with the alternator removal, disconnect the battery, unplug the air conditioning compressor connector, and unscrew the relevant mounting bolts, leaving it hanging without disconnecting the pipes; then disconnect the connector from the alternator and the positive cable, and remove the tensioner to access the alternator's mounting bolts; at this point, you also need to remove the power steering pump, again without disconnecting the pipes, to free the alternator and extract it from its location by pulling it out from below. Proceed in reverse for the installation of the new alternator.
