How to change the battery in the BMW key

Model: BMW Serie 1 E81, E82, MK 1, E87 - Years 2004-2013

On the most common BMW keys, the internal battery powers the remote opening, central locking, and, where present, keyless entry functions. When the remote stops responding regularly or the instrument cluster displays a low battery warning, it’s time to intervene. The operation is quick and does not require special tools. Start by extracting the emergency mechanical key from the remote body. This element also serves as a lever to separate the two halves of the casing: insert it into the designated slot and give it a slight twist to open the shell without forcing. It’s important to proceed gently to avoid marking the plastic or damaging the internal clips. Once the remote is open, the button cell battery becomes visible. Before removing it, observe the orientation carefully, as polarity must be respected on the replacement. Lift the battery and replace it with a new one of the same type, ensuring it is clean and free of residue on the contact surfaces. Insert the new element, close the shell by pressing the two halves together until they click. The mechanical key can then be reinserted into its slot. At this point, the remote is ready for use: in most cases, no synchronisation procedure is necessary, as the key will function immediately.
