How to Remove the Engine from a Classic Fiat 500

To remove the engine from the classic Fiat 500, start by disconnecting the dynamo cables by unscrewing an 8mm nut and a 10mm nut from the terminals. Once the dynamo cables are disconnected, remove the fuel pipe by unscrewing the clamp screw and pulling the pipe from the fuel pump. After removing the fuel pipe, take off the air filter pipe and cover by removing the 3 clips (2 on the pipe and 1 on the air filter cover). With the pipe and cover removed, proceed to remove the under-engine cover by unscrewing the star screws (from underneath the car). Once the under-engine cover is off, remove the air duct (rubber) simply by pulling it. After removing the duct, take off the throttle cable by loosening the nut with a spanner and holding the cable with pliers to pull it out of the housing (do the same with the starter cable). Once the cables are removed, take off the second rubber pipe from the cabin by pulling it as well. After removing the second pipe, disconnect the coil by unscrewing the terminal nuts. With the coil removed, you can take off the starter motor by unscrewing the 3 nuts (13mm) and disconnecting the cables by unscrewing the nuts. After removing the starter motor, proceed to take off the 4 bolts (13mm) on the gearbox bell housing that hold the engine (2 on one side and 2 on the other). Once the bolts are removed, while holding the engine up with a workshop hoist, unscrew the 4 bolts (10mm) of the rear engine crossmember. Finally, remove the engine mount by unscrewing the 2 nuts, then take off the crossmember and engine mount. You can now remove the engine by lowering the hoist or raising the car to take the engine out of the body.
