Why do modern cars have two reservoirs for the coolant?

Many modern cars, especially those with hybrid or high-performance engines, have two reservoirs for the coolant, like the Nissan Qashqai in the video. This is because they have two distinct systems that operate at different temperatures: the high-temperature system cools the engine block and the cylinder head, while the low-temperature system manages components such as the turbocharger, intercooler, hybrid batteries, and exhaust gas recirculation systems. In some cases, a second reservoir serves as a reserve or for an auxiliary cooling system, such as for the automatic transmission or differential; in fact, this system is common in sports cars or off-road vehicles. The main reservoir is usually connected to the radiator with a pressure cap, while the secondary one is smaller, has a screw cap, and is connected to an auxiliary circuit. We need to be very careful not to confuse it with the windshield washer fluid! Therefore, we should be very cautious when topping them off.
