How to Replace the Coolant in a Porsche Boxster 986

Model: Porsche Boxster 986, MK 1 - Years 1996-2004

This guide shows how to bleed and replace the engine coolant in the Porsche Boxster 986. To drain the old coolant, safely lift the car and remove the plastic panel at the rear. From the bottom of the vehicle, you can open the drain valve. Open the cap of the coolant reservoir to facilitate the flow; you need to let the remaining fluid drain from the hoses by disconnecting the three hoses that lead to the reservoir. Now you can clean the system; lift the plastic panel under the filler cap and open the valve, then fill the reservoir with cleaning fluid. If the Porsche is the Techtronic version, you must disconnect fuse B1 to disable the shutoff valve control system. At this point, start the engine and bring it to operating temperature, checking the activation of the front radiator fan. Run the engine at 2500 rpm for 5 minutes with peaks of 5000 rpm every 30 seconds. Turn off the engine and repeat the procedure again. Turn off the engine and reinstall fuse B1. Drain the fluid reservoir again and close the drain valve. At this point, fill the reservoir with the new coolant. Perform the startup procedure maintaining engine RPM as done previously and top off the fluid. If the engine temperature rises excessively, you may need to bleed the air or add more coolant.
