This video explains the symptoms of a faulty steering sensor. It is a crucial sensor for stability systems (ESP/VSC/TCS and power steering). Besides the engine warning light, the most common symptom is the illumination of the ESP/ABS light, as the systems no longer receive reliable data; the electric power steering uses data from this sensor, and if it fails, assistance is lost, making the steering wheel suddenly very hard to turn. After a suspension adjustment, the sensor must be recalibrated: forgetting this could cause the stability systems to detect a fault; in some models, the sensor is integrated into a module that also manages the airbag in the steering wheel, which may cause the related light to illuminate. DIY diagnosis here is difficult; a professional tool or a good-quality OBD2 is necessary. Costs vary greatly depending on the vehicle, starting from a minimum of £200 and exceeding £600 if integrated with the airbag.
