Checks to Perform on a High Mileage Volkswagen Jetta MK5

Ensure the coolant level is adequate, as well as the windscreen washer fluid. Check the oil level using the dipstick, making sure the car is on a level surface. The brake fluid reservoir is located under the bonnet, so remove the cover to check it; it should be near the maximum level. While you're there, inspect the air filter located under the cover you removed. Look for any oil leaks under the cover. Check the belts, especially if you hear noises when starting the vehicle; inspect them for cracks. Remember to replace the tensioner when you replace the belt. If you lift the car, check the suspension by shaking it from side to side to ensure the bearings are still good. Inspect the struts: is there any fluid leaking? Does the vehicle bounce more than normal? Check underneath for the oil filter and ensure there are no leaks in this area, and also check for cracks in the exhaust. At the rear, inspect the anti-roll bar connections; if the bushes are noisy, they need replacing, as do the coil springs. Also, check the rear shock absorbers and ensure there is no rust on the chassis.
