Cleaning the EGR Valve and Intake Manifold

The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) recirculates a "small" portion (5-15%) of the exhaust gases by passing them from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold: the recirculation of the burnt gases reduces the amount of mixture available for combustion and power output and serves to lower the maximum temperatures of the cycle, thereby reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
The close contact between the exhaust gases and the EGR valve causes it to become clogged, resulting in a loss of balance in the engine's operation (especially at startup), along with a loss of performance and increased fuel consumption.
It is therefore suggested to remove the EGR valve, detach the actuator (solenoid), and thoroughly clean the valve body with industrial degreaser; it is also advisable to remove and clean the intake manifold to eliminate all deposits and dust residues.
In some cases, it may be more appropriate to install a refurbished EGR valve as the acidity of the exhaust gases corrodes the seat of the valve's shutter and the shutter itself, and simple cleaning may not be sufficient to restore its operation; it is also possible that the anomaly may lie in the actuator.
