What Are the Problems with the Oil Bath Timing Belt

In this video, we will look at the problems concerning the oil bath timing belt fitted to the Stellantis Puretech 1.2 three-cylinder engine (formerly PSA). The main issue is the wear of the belt, which is immersed in engine oil and can degrade due to petrol (liquid or vapour) infiltrations, especially when the engine is cold. Petrol damages the elastomers of the belt, causing the rubber to detach and form residues. Rubber fragments can clog the oil filter, reducing lubrication; this leads to premature engine wear and, in severe cases, irreparable damage, such as bent valves and seizing. Common symptoms include the oil pressure warning light being constantly on, strange noises when the engine is cold, and loss of power. In 2020 and 2022, Stellantis launched a campaign to replace the belt with an improved version; the warranty covers costs for vehicles under 5 years or 100,000 miles if maintenance has always been carried out at an authorised network. Pay close attention to the oil condition and replace the belt before the official interval.
