Instructions for Replacing the Timing Belt

Model: Toyota Avensis MK 1, T220 - Years 1997-2003

To easily replace the timing belt, first remove some components that interfere with the pulley cascade, such as the coolant expansion tank and the windscreen washer reservoir. To gain more working space, it is also advisable to lift the vehicle on a lift, remove the right front wheel, the protective plastic components, and the side engine mount, applying support underneath. Then, loosen the adjusting bolt of the alternator tensioner and remove the auxiliary belt; take off the timing belt cover, also removing the rocker cover (remove the spark plug leads and disconnect the hoses).
Once the pulley cascade is free, remove the crankshaft pulley: a special tool is needed, but it can also be crafted as shown in the video. After removing this pulley, with the underlying plate and the rest of the covers removed, you can finally proceed with the replacement of the toothed belt: align the timing marks (remove the spark plugs to reduce compression and facilitate the rotation of the camshaft, and check the position of the first piston at top dead centre with a screwdriver), loosen the tensioner and remove both the belt and the tensioner pulley with the corresponding spring. The new kit includes a new tensioner pulley with spring and the new toothed belt: proceed in reverse for installation, ensuring to keep the timing marks fixed.
