Inspection of Front Differential

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

To inspect the differential, you need to lift the vehicle. One solution is to drive the front wheels onto special car ramps and then lift the rear by placing a jack under the rear axle and subsequently placing appropriate axle stands. Once the vehicle is safely lifted, allow it to cool down as the differential is located just behind the oil sump of the automatic gearbox, near the exhaust. Once you access the differential housing, you can check the oil level by unscrewing the side fill plug: if oil comes out immediately after unscrewing the plug, the level is fine; otherwise, top it up until it overflows.
