How to Replace the Timing Belt on a Ford Focus 1.5 TDCi MK3

On this engine, the water pump is mounted behind the timing belt, and the idler pulley bearing is attached to the pump itself. For this reason, it is advisable to replace the water pump when changing the belt. There are three locking points: on the engine block, flywheel side, a 5 mm hole; on the fuel pump, rear side, a 6 mm hole; on the cylinder head, accessible after removing the valve cover, an 8 mm hole. Disconnect the battery, lift the car, and remove these components: power steering reservoir; coolant expansion tank; auxiliary belt and water pump pulley; engine mount on the driver's side (the engine will need to be supported by an external support); upper and lower timing covers. Bring the engine to top dead centre and insert the 5 mm pin; then the 8 mm and 6 mm pins. Use a counterhold 205-072 to hold the pulleys in place and loosen the bolts; release the tensioner and remove the belt. Remove the crankshaft pulley, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump. Install the new pump (with a new gasket); fit the new tensioner, the adjustment washer, tighten the 10 mm tensioner bolt by hand, and install the new idler pulley. Fit the new belt counterclockwise starting from the crankshaft pulley, tension it until the reference marks on the tensioner align perfectly, then tighten the tensioner bolt to 25 Nm; tighten the pulleys, remove the locking pins, turn the crankshaft two complete turns clockwise, return to TDC and reinsert the pins: reassemble everything: timing covers, water pump pulley, engine mount, auxiliary belt, valve cover. Refill with coolant, reconnect the battery, and start the engine.
