How to change the engine oil and filter of a Renault Clio DIY (do it yourself)

To perform the engine oil change and oil filter replacement on the Renault Clio, work with the engine warm (not hot) and secure the car on a flat surface by engaging the handbrake and using approved jack stands if you need to work under the vehicle. Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap and dipstick: these will help facilitate draining and for the final check. Access the underside of the engine and, if present, remove the underbody protection to reach the oil pan. Position a large container and unscrew the drain plug, allowing the used oil to fully drain. During this phase, check the condition of the washer/gasket on the plug and replace it if necessary, then reattach the plug, tightening it to the torque specified by the manufacturer (without over-tightening).

Next, move on to the oil filter: depending on the engine, it may be a screw-on external filter or a cartridge in a housing. Remove the filter, let any residual oil drain out, and clean the mounting surface. If there are o-rings or gaskets, replace them with new ones and lightly lubricate the seals with a thin layer of clean oil before reinstallation. Reattach the filter correctly and ensure it is seated properly, avoiding excessive tightening. At this point, top up through the upper cap with the correct amount of oil and with the grade/specification recommended for your Clio. Start the engine for a few seconds, turn it off, and wait a couple of minutes, then check the level with the dipstick and adjust it until it is between MIN and MAX. With the engine running, check for any leaks from the drain plug or the filter, and after a final quick check of the level, close everything up and dispose of the used oil and filter at an authorized collection center.
