Instructions for Checking Cylinder Compression

Model: Volkswagen Transporter T4, MK 4 - Years 1990-2003

To check the condition of the piston seals and thus the cylinder compression, connect the appropriate manometer to the spark plug sockets. First, create some working space by slightly moving the radiator: unscrew the mounting pins from the grille and lift it slightly. At this point, disconnect the leads from the spark plugs, blow on the sockets to remove any dirt that may enter the cylinders, and remove the spark plugs; then attach the manometer to the first cylinder, disconnect the camshaft sensor to prevent the ECU from firing the ignition and attempting to start the engine: the manometer needle will remain at the maximum pressure value measured. Repeat the operation on the other cylinders.
