How to Replace the Thermostat Valve on a VW Golf

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 5, Golf 5, Golf V - Years 2003-2008
Part: Thermostat

The thermostat valve allows the hot coolant from the engine to exchange with the cooled liquid from the radiator, thus it is constantly in contact with the coolant; if it is only water, rust may form, causing the thermostat valve to jam and leading to overheating with obvious consequences. The thermostat valve is located inside the plastic connector attached to the engine block, just above the alternator. Unscrew the fastening bolts of the connector to remove it and then extract the valve to fit the new one. After installation, flush the system and use only antifreeze.
