How to Replace the Timing Belt and Pulley on a Renault Clio IV

Today, we will explain how to independently replace the timing belt and pulley on a Renault Clio IV. Before starting the replacement, open the front bonnet and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the front wheel nuts and lift the vehicle; once the vehicle is on a stand, remove the front wheel and the wheel arch liner. Using a 13 mm spanner, remove the lower cover of the vehicle. Remove the hose connected to the radiator to drain and bleed the coolant circuit. Remove the upper engine mount using a jack placed under the oil sump. Using a ratchet and a 16 mm socket, unscrew the three bolts of the upper engine mount to remove it; unscrew the bolts of the upper engine mount on the chassis using the same tools. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the engine mount. Using a ratchet and a 10 mm Allen key, unscrew the fixing bolts and remove the cover to proceed with the engine timing. Rotate the engine to access the pulley with a ratchet and an 18 mm Allen key, aligning the two marks on the pulley to insert the timing pin through the hole under the starter motor to lock the rotation of the flywheel. Next, put the car in fifth gear to lock the rotation of the crankshafts and unscrew the damper pulley with a spanner, ensuring to use the timing pin to lock the crankshafts. Loosen the tensioner roller and the pulley to remove the timing belt. Using an 8 mm flat spanner, remove the fixing bolt of the water hose. Disconnect the hose and using a 10 mm spanner, unscrew the bolt on the water pump. Insert the elbow hose and position the new pump. Connect the connector and sensor, then screw the bolt onto the hose that must be inserted immediately after between the pump and the engine. Pass the new timing belt through the pulley to tighten the components of the belt. After installing the belt, remove the locking pin from the pulley, ensuring that the engine rotation does not slip, as this could break the new belt. Maintain tension with a 13 mm spanner. Rotate the crankshaft six times to ensure normal rotation. Refit the previously removed parts and lower the vehicle.
