Replacement of Engine Oil, Oil Filter, and Brake Pads

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

Open the front bonnet and ensure it is securely supported. Unscrew the fixing bolts of the plastic engine cover and remove it. Place a suitable capacity plastic container (approximately 5 litres) under the oil sump to collect the used oil, then unscrew the drain plug located on the side. During this phase, locate the oil filter (cartridge filter) in the engine compartment near the coolant reservoir: unscrew the cap, remove the old cartridge, and insert the new one; before re-screwing the cap, replace the O-ring seals and lubricate them with oil. Then, re-screw the drain plug after replacing the copper washer and fill the engine with new oil according to the SAE specifications and quantities indicated in the user manual. Next, to replace the rear brake pads, lift the vehicle, remove the wheel and the fixing bolts of the brake caliper (located at the rear) and remove the old pads and disc. Use a wire brush to remove any oxidation residues, fit the new disc onto the hub, insert the new pads, and reposition the caliper, tightening the respective fixing bolts.
