Instructions for Cleaning the EGR Valve

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 5, Golf 5, Golf V - Years 2003-2008

It is recommended to perform this maintenance with the engine cold to avoid contact with excessively hot components. The disassembly of the EGR valve and the shut-off valve (which resembles a throttle body) is very simple: they are located one behind the other at the front of the engine, and you just need to disconnect the intercooler hose and then unscrew the fixing bolts of both valves and those of the exhaust gas duct flange. Once the valves are removed, it is advisable to check the free rotation of the butterfly of the shut-off valve to exclude any internal gear breakages, and to test the integrity of the diaphragm of the EGR valve actuator with a manual vacuum pump. After this, proceed to wash the parts with a suitable cleaner, removing all residues of dirt and deposits.
