How to Replace the Water Pump and Timing Belt on a Lancia Ypsilon 1.4 GPL

This procedure explains how to replace the water pump and timing belt on a Lancia Ypsilon 1.4 with a GPL system: start by examining the kit to purchase, which includes the water pump, the gasket to place between the pump and the crankshaft, the timing belt (note the direction of rotation), the tensioner bearing, the specific tool for tensioning, and some black sealant paste for additional sealing beyond the gasket. Now, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, the GPL system components, the engine mount, the timing belt cover, the wheel, the inner wheel arch, and the engine pulley cover. Begin by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and the GPL system to create space for removing the engine mount, which you will take off using a pneumatic gun. Move to the side of the vehicle, lift it with a jack, remove the wheel cap, and take off the wheel by unscrewing the bolts with a pneumatic gun. Remove the entire inner wing and the engine cover pulley. Next, continue removing the timing belt cover, the auxiliary belt, and finish disassembling the engine mount by placing a jack under the engine itself. Now, you can remove the remaining part of the engine mount to access the timing belt cover (also drain the water from the radiator), which you will also remove to see the auxiliary belt. Remove the auxiliary belt using a spanner to leverage the hexagon at the end, which, when pulled down, loosens the tensioner, allowing you to take off the auxiliary belt. After that, loosen the pulley that holds the belt tight, remove the belt and the water pump, and now take off the crankshaft pulley. Align the engine, remove the water pump held by 4 screws, clean its seat, apply black sealant paste on the pump, place the gasket, and fit it into its housing. Now install the belt, respecting the markings; once installed, pass it from the water pump to the camshaft, down to the tensioner bearing (respect the direction of rotation of the belt). Once done, tension the belt, make a couple of engine rotations while respecting the rotation markings (clockwise), and recheck the markings made earlier or those on the block (if the markings match, the belt is properly tensioned). Now, you can refit the timing belt protection cover, reattach the crankshaft pulley, install the auxiliary belt, and reassemble everything by reversing the disassembly procedure. As a final operation, refill the radiator fluid, warm up the engine, and once the fan comes on, bleed the air out. When the air is out, you can top up.
